Round 1 Completed

Hello Bowlers,

Round 1 has been run and won (and lost) to get the long awaited season underway, and not without a few twists and turns.  I believe there was some concern about getting all five sides onto the greens, however, at the Eleventh hour, we were able to do so, albeit with one short in the Fifth side.  It was then discovered that we were now two short in the Fourth side due to late scratchings, but in a stroke of luck at the Eleven-thirty hour, City of Heidelberg gave our Fifth side a walkover and we were able to cover the two vacant spots in the Fourth side.  All of this before the first bowl kissed the grass (or carpet) to launch the season.  Those Selectors must have nightmares.

Anyway, onto the crux of the matter.  Already having one side up, we only had to get the next four into the winners circle.  The Fourth side travelled to North Balwyn for their contest and picked up 14 points in a tight game which saw them victorious by 3 shots, 79 -76.  A creditable start to the season.

Lorraine Campbell, Terrye Meade, Russell Hyde and Paul Gregory 20 – 15

Noel Broadhurst, Trevor Robertson, Rob Barclay and Colin McDonald 21 – 24

Alan Phillips, Kevin Nelson, Phil Hynes and Luke Roche 19 – 22

Kale Files, Gae Messina, Peter Bell and Bruce McDonald 19 – 15

The Third team played at home and hosted Lalor.  They had a comfortable win in attaining 16 points with 37 shots up, 95 – 58.  A very good opener indeed.

Neil Andrewartha, Ray Prestney, Kay Plain and Leo Bosso 30 -14

Robin Doherty, Michelle Robertson, Ralph Moulden and Glenn Lyons 25 – 12

Bob Dunbar, Jane Edgcumbe, Simon Matthews and Brian Tipping 16 – 18

Jack Dunbar, Tim Pullyblank, Peter Burke and Bec Merrick 24 -14

Highlights for the team were that Michelle Robertson played in her first winning rink since beginning her bowling career, and first-gamer Tim Pullyblank made a resting toucher with his very first bowl in a pennant match.

The Second side went to Greensborough, but did not fare so well.  Unfortunately only one rink was successful, and I’m told another rink was robbed of a win on the last bowl of the match when the opposition skipper did a “Leo Bosso” to finish up with 3 shots beating our rink by 1.  We salvaged 2 points from a 72 – 93 loss – 21 shots in the red.

Gwenda Bail, Colin Watson, Kevin Meade and Don Casey 16 – 22

Paul Bassett, Nicole Carriero, Steve Kovac and Jeff Cook 21 – 22

Chris Ball, Fiona Tennant, John Couling and Jim Gregory 11 -30

Graeme Bravo, Louisa Hemingway, Graham Bright and John Head 24 – 19

It was good to note “Heady” back on the green and, I’m told, as competitive as ever.  Still berating himself for putting down an “ordinary” bowl, but very encouraging to his rink in their endeavours on the green.

The Ones played at home in what, I am told, was an absolute ball-tearer.  Hosting Ivanhoe, three rinks had concluded their games with their combined scores reading Rosanna 67, Ivanhoe 53, however, the fourth rink was telling a different story in that Ivanhoe were winning that rink, 25 to Rosanna’s 11, meaning that with two ends to play the overall scores on the big board were 78 apiece.  On the 83rd end Ivanhoe held the upper hand and went into the last end one shot up overall, and 15 shots up on the Rosanna people.  After 12 of the final 16 bowls to be played had been delivered, Ivanhoe were up at the head.  After 14 had been delivered, Rosanna was holding one.  After 15, Rosanna was still holding one.  Rowan Sharp stepped onto the mat with the final bowl of the day, and in his first game for Rosanna, delivered the perfect bowl.  It travelled down the green on a perfect line, at the perfect weight, finishing precisely on the jack to move it back a wee distance enabling Rosanna to pick up three shots, and win the match overall by two shots, 81 – 79 and grab 14 points.

Needless to say Ivanhoe were utterly  gutted, and Rosanna were deleriously ecstatic.  It was a seriously good win under immense pressure, and shows what can be done if you never give up, even though the rink might be having a dirty day.

Margaret Hunt, Veronika Crea, Warren Williams and Alan Mason 31 – 16

Matty Ferguson, John Aldridge, Marcus Hadley and Damian Jardine 20 – 22

Mil Crea, Robbie Boxshall, Damian Crea and Rod Kerrison 16 -15

Ian Crawford, Dan Hartrick, Peter Livingstone and Rowan Sharp 14 – 26

So, 4 wins and 1 loss to start the season was quite a fair effort.

The best winning rink on the day was that of Neil Andrewartha, Ray Prestney, Kay Plain and Leo Bosso , with 16 shots up.  Well done you folk, you have set a high standard.

There were a number of Milestones to be recognised on the weekend, and we extend the Club’s congratulations to the following:

500 Club Games – Noel Broadhurst and Leo Bosso

First Club Game For Rosanna:

Phil Hynes, Peter Livingstone, Tim Pullyblank and Rowan Sharp

So, that’s a wrap for this week.  Well done everyone who took part in the doings.

Keep ’em rolling.

Well, here we go. The final home and away game for the 2024-25 season. But it is never too late to stop doing the same over and over if you are not getting the different result you hoped to achieve. Bad habit means many tend to make the same mistakes over and over...
