Hot News

Thursday 14 April, 2022

I have picked up the pen once again to bring you some worthy and joyous news.

Rosanna Bowling Club featured in the semi finals of the Yarra Region Champion of Champions event, which sorts out the champion singles player in the whole of our region.

Starting with winning your own Club Singles championship, you then progress through a series of matches to determine the eventual Champion of Champions of Yarra Region.

Our two Club Champions, Margaret Hunt and Aaron Van Haaften, have done just that.  Reaching the semi final of the competition, Margaret faced off against Dianne McKee from Alphingyon, in a thriller of a match.  The two players were very evenly matched throughout the game, and on the second last end Dianne was holding a two shot lead (22 – 24) and had 2/3 shots in the head when Margaret played her fourth bowl.

Summing up the situation, Margaret decided to play a running shot through Dianne’s bowls, executed the play perfectly, and won the end on a measure (23 – 24).

Margaret rolled the jack to just beyond 3/4 length and put her first two bowls right on, one being a toucher, however, Dianne killed the end with her second delivery.  Margaret went the same length in the re-run, and again attacked the jack.  Dianne had no answer this time and a very hot Margaret became winner, winner, chicken dineer.

Aaron came up against Clark McEvoy from Diamond Creek and put on a superb display of bowling mastery.  Whilst it could have been anybody’s game in the early stages, Aaron gradually imposed his superiority, and ran out a comfortable 25 – 15 winner.

Congratulations to both our Champions and our very best wishes in next week’s final.

The games next week will be played at MCC on Wednesday night (20 April), commencing at 7:00pm.  If you feel inclined, I am sure Margaret and Aaron would be appreciative of your support.

The other snippet of news was the Club Open Triples competition played on 2 April, in a new format.  The style of games was based around the BPL with sets and power plays, with the 16 teams entered being divided into 4 sections.  Each team played 3 games of two sets by 4 ends in each set.  If there was a tie of one set each, a tie breaker of one end was played to determine the winner of the set.

The four section winners played in semi finals, with the two winners playing off for the club Triples Championship, which, this year, went to Rod Kerrison (Skip), Ian Crawford (Second) and Mark Files (Lead).  Runners-up were Robbie Boxshall (Skip), Peter Burke (Second) and Gary Veale (Lead).

Perhaps a few tweaks to the format for next year, if it is to continue in the same manner, however, a job well done by the organisers and an enjoyable day overall.

The Tout.
