Fours Galore Yarra Region

Here we are at Camberwell Central, 11:00am Sunday morning.  Four sides in the Yarra Fours semi finals.  Two mens sides and two ladies (composite) sides.  And some Roanna supporters to cheer the sides on.  Lovely to see Sue and John Lindley, Mil Crea, Fiona Tennant, Rod Kerrison, Alan Mason and Don Casey, turn up to support our Rosanna players. (If I missed anyone I apologise, but thanks for being there).

Rosanna was represented in each of the semi finals, such was the draw.  Damian Crea, Warren Williams, Simon Matthews and John Head were stiff to draw the crack Bundoora rink which featured 3 Premier League, and 1 First Division, players.  Whilst our boys tried valiantly they were no match for Bundoora and went down 3 – 25.

Our other Mens rink of Aaron Van Haaften, Andrew Dalli, Dan Hartrick and Matty Ferguson, played a solid team from Ivanhoe, in a very close encounter and got over the line by 1 shot, 10 – 9.

So, one team into the final and up against the hot-shot team from Bundoora.  The final was an epic battle.  Bundoora skipped away to a 6 – 2 lead after three ends and it was looking grim for Rosanna, however, we came back with a three in the fourth, and over the next eleven ends there was never more than a shot in the game.  Our boys were able to match Bundoora with some excellent bowls played.  It was a bit of a heartbreak when, on the last end we finished one shy of the win.  Bundoora 10, Rosanna 9.

All due credit must be given to all Rosanna players who took part in the Fours.  You acquitted yourselves admirably and did Rosanna proud.  Thank you for your effort.

Our four girls were split into composite sides and Lorraine Campbell and Veronika Crea played with Leanne Sullivan (Donvale) and Deb Code (Montmorency), whilst Margaret Hunt and Rachel Powers teamed with Di McKee (Alphington) and Denise Huender (Donvale).

Lorraine and Veronika came up against the red hot favourites for the Championship, a composite side consisting of Premier and Div 1 players.  They played an exceptional game and surprised everyone with a resounding 16 – 10 win.

Margaret and Rachel’s team had an extremely comfortable win over their opponent, 22 – 5.

This meant, of course, that the two Rosanna sides were playing off against one another for the Championship.

Unfortunately the game turned out to be a bit of a disappointment as a spectacle, and became very one sided with Margaret and Rachel’s rink winning 31 – 6.   No matter the final result, the fact is that Rosanna Bowling Club did exceptionally well in both the Men and Women’s sections, and we now cheer on Margaret and Rachel as they go into the next phase to possibly become State Champions.

The Tout.
