In excellent conditions on Sunday 31st January, both men’s and ladies’ RBC Singles Championships were played together in front of a good crowd of spectators. We were treated to some fine bowling.
Earlier in the day, the men’s semi-finals had to be played – also great performances from all players. In one semi-final, Aaron van Haaften was up against Ian Crawford. After a slow start, Ian produced his best form to push Aaron all the way, but finding him too good Aaron won 25-15. The other semi-final was between Damian Jardine and Rod Kerrison which was a classic, exciting game. Rod came from behind to snatch victory 25-23.
The ladies’ final saw Margaret Hunt looking for her fourth championship. This time her surprise opponent was Rebecca (Bec) Merrick who upset defending champion Kay Plain in the semi-final. Once again, Margaret soon found her rhythm and was unstoppable with her consistency. Nevertheless, Bec tried hard and did very well to reach the final, but found Margaret too strong.
The men’s finalists had to front up again, just 30 minutes after completing their semi-finals. A big ask. However, the final was a great game to watch from these top-side players. We witnessed fantastic draw bowling and very tight heads. The game was very even at 8-7, but then Aaron skipped away to lead 19-9. Straight away, Rod showed his fighting qualities and came back with four shots and then it was game on. Rod inched closer but found Aaron’s lead too much and Aaron once again proved how hard he is to beat with four bowls. He won 25-19 and is a worthy champion with four consecutive Club Championships.
A special mention to Rod Kerrison who came to Rosanna this season from Greensborough BC. He has obviously taken to grass like a duck to water. He is a fine acquisition for our Club.
