What a great result for the Rosanna Bowling Club with Margaret Hunt winning the Yarra Region Ladies Champion of Champions event, and Aaron Van Haaften attaining runner-up in the Men’s event. RBC congratulates Margaret and Aaron on their stirling performances.
In the men’s game, Aaron was up against Dean O’Neill (Bundoora) who is highly rated in the Victorian bowls community. The match started fairly evenly with both players scoring ends, then Aaron broke away from Dean with some excellent draw bowling, to go to a 10 – 3 lead.
Both players were displaying a sensational show of draw bowling, however, a couple of loose ends from Aaron, let Dean back into the game and to a one shot lead (14 – 15), but give Aaron his due he fought back to snatch the lead again (17 – 16).
The spectators were then priviliged to witness brilliance from both players. Aaron would put a bowl very close to kitty, however, Dean was able to better it. His constant pressure attacking the jack was impressive, and over the last few ends he had too much firepower for Aaron, to run out a 17 – 25 winner.
Margaret played Denise Huender from Hawthorn, and this match was similar to that of the men with both players matching shot for shot. Margaret edged clear by a few shots and it appeared from the way she was bowling, that it might have been an early night, however, Denise won the mat and went minimum length, turning the match on its head.
The tactic interrupted Margaret’s flow and the game came back to even terms (17 – 17). Margaret then played a brilliant end to pick up three shots, and followed that up with two shots on the next two ends, to jump to a 24 – 17 lead. But, that last shot is always the hardest to achieve, and on the next two ends Denise picked up five shots bringing the score to 24 – 22.
On the next end Margaret held shot with her second bowl, then her third bowl was a resting toucher. Denise had no answer this time, and our Margaret became the Yarra Region Champion of Champions in 2022, bettering her last year’s runner-up performance.
RBC is very proud of Margaret and Aaron’s efforts and achievements, and wishes Margaret evry success later in the year when she pits her skills against other Victorian regional winners, to decide the best in the State.
The Tout.
