All Sides Up For Midweek Opener

Hello Bowlers,

Well, Saturday set the Club off on a good note when 4 of the 5 Sides greeted the judge, and it fell to the Midweekers to strut their stuff.  It was drinks all round on the Prez because three out of three came home in front.  A great start to a new season.

Side 1 went up the road to Montmorency and missed winning the three rinks by the barest of margins, in a very good showing against the usually strong Monty side.

Gwenda Bail, Kevin Meade, Jeff Cook and Damian Crea had a nice 7 shot win, 18 – 11

Chris Ball, Tony Campbell-Burns, John Aldridge and Alan Mason were a bit stiff to go down by 1 shot, 17 – 18

Robin Doherty, Margaret Hunt, Peter Livingstone and Warren Williams were comfortable in a 6 shot win, 19 – 13

A 12 shot overall advantage, 54 – 42, and 14 points to start the season.  Well done.

The Second side kept the home fires burning and sneaked across the line, 7 shots in front of the opposition.  It was a mixed bag with one rink up, but having a very good win, one rink down, and the third rink tieing with their opponent, which happened to be Ivanhoe.

Rob Barclay, Lorraine Campbell, Veronika Crea and Jim Gregory, very solid with 14 shots up, 25 – 11

Louisa Hemingway, Nicloe Carriero, Mil Crea and Leo Bosso couldn’t quite split the difference and tied, 17 – 17

Jack Dunbar, Colin Watson, Peter Bell and Glenn Lyons fought galantly, but could not quite bridge the 7 shot gap and went down 16 – 23

The side scored 13 points with their overall 58 -51 win.

The Third side went to Bundoora to do battle, and recreated something akin to Saturday’s First side heroics.  With one rink finished and two rinks to complete their last ends, Rosanna was down 4 shots.  When the second rink finished their last end, Rosanna was down 2 shots on the big board.  Noel Broadhurst put one of his bowls very close to the jack, and Alan Phillips backed him up.  Those two bowls remained undisturbed whilst the next 8 bowls traversed the length of the green, and made not one iota of difference.  It was tense bowling and just as tense viewing, but those two bowls got Kay’s rink up by one shot overall, and carried Rosanna to victory by one shot overall.  An excellent win by Rosanna indeed, 51 -50, 14 points.

Kevin Nelson, Tony Canty, Ken Barr and Don Casey, 7 shots up 20 – 13

Terrye Meade, Rob Hunt, Phil Hynes and John Head, 7 shots down 12 – 19

Noel Broadhurst, Alan Phillips, Ray Prestney and Kay Plain, 1 shot up 19 – 18

Best winning rink for the round was Jim Gregory, Veronika Crea, Lorraine Campbell and Rob Barclay with 14 shots up.  Congratulations, a great effort.

Well done to all bowlers who kicked off the season, you can be justifyably proud of your efforts.  And there are a number of milestones to kick off the season.  Firstly, John Aldridge 50 midweek games.  Secondly, Louisa Hemingway, Alan Mason, Peter Livingstone, Rob Hunt and Phil Hynes, all played their first midweek game for Rosanna, and finally, Tony Campbell-Burns played his first pennant game with the Goannas.

So, a great start to the season and hopefully much more ahead.

Keep ’em rolling.
